What's the mentality surrounding animal abuse?

what makes someone abuse or make an animal, such as a pet or farmstock, suffer sometimes to its death. are there emotional, or mental problems here (obviously) and are they 'accounted' for by either temporary mental disturbances (e.g. they had a bad week, they themselves are being mistreated by people, their peers don't value animal life), or more serious mental disturbances?
